In the wake of the tragic stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives and injured 56, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara announced that a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will be introduced to prevent such incidents during large-scale public events.

After inspecting the stampede site, Parameshwara said, “The Chief Minister has already ordered a magisterial inquiry. I came here to assess the gates where the stampede occurred. A detailed investigation will be led by the Bangalore City District Commissioner. Until the report is submitted, I won’t speculate, but strict action will be taken against those responsible.”

The stampede occurred when an estimated crowd of over three lakh people gathered outside the stadium to celebrate Royal Challengers Bangalore’s IPL 2025 victory. The stadium’s capacity is just 34,000.

Highlighting the urgent need for preventive measures, Parameshwara said, “We are going to formulate a new SOP. From now on, any major event—be it a public meeting, ceremony, or celebration—must adhere to police department protocols. Innocent lives should not be lost in moments of celebration.”

Describing the aftermath of the incident, he expressed deep sorrow. “I visited the morgue yesterday. Young people, just 20-25 years old, lost their lives while coming together in joy. It was painful to witness.”

He also referenced data from the metro authorities, which showed that 8.7 lakh people used metro services between 9 am and 11 pm on the day of the event, indicating the massive turnout.

Ten people are still receiving treatment, though none are critically injured. Forty-six others have been discharged. The government has announced ₹10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and free treatment for the injured.

Parameshwara concluded by stating that he will hold meetings with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) officials and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), while technical aspects of the incident will be examined by the DGP and Bengaluru City Police Commissioner.
